To be fair, salons with commercial grade tanning beds are going to be more powerful, get the job done faster, and you never have to worry about maintaining them. And although you do have to 'pay per tan', you could pay for a lot of tanning sessions with the money you spend to own your own tanning bed. In addition to that, you get to try different types of tanning beds with different bulbs and see which ones you like best.

On the other hand, tanning at home means no appointments, no waiting, no drive, and no worry over cleanliness. So obviously it is pretty handy and other family members can use the tanning bed as well. Convenience is definitely a big plus. What's not to love about tanning at home?

No appointment necessary! And no driving to the salon. There is no inconvenience of calling ahead and scheduling appointments or waiting for a bed.

Want to tan at midnight? You can! Don't worry about salon hours or policies.

In the comfort of your home, you'll never have to worry about prying eyes or an unlocked door.

Cleanliness

At some point you might recoup the cost of going to a salon by having a tanning bed at home. But then cost is obviously not the only reason for owning your own tanning bed. You can tan first thing in the morning or late at night and you have more privacy. You can also choose the type of bulbs and other accessories you want.

So really, it is a trade off. Let someone else maintain it, or maintain it yourself so you can have the convenience, privacy, etc.. Remember, home units can be less powerful than commercial units. The base home tanning beds however, can plug directly into a wall outlet with no special wiring required - something that appeals to many home tanners.

If you are considering a larger, more sophisticated bed for your home, you will first need to look at installing a buck booster - a transformer which basically regulates the voltage so you don't damage the electrical circuitry on your newly purchased tanning bed. Some even larger beds have to be 'hard wired' directly into your home's junction box.

When choosing a home tanning bed don't forget to consider space. Many people forget about the space needed to install a tanning bed. Most descriptions of tanning beds will include a minimum required room size.

So, while some companies like to boast how they have larger tanning beds, that may be exactly what you DON'T need. Remember, tanning beds have fans inside that help keep the circuitry cool and therefore functioning properly (which also extends bulb life). So don't try to squeeze a bed into a room that is just too small.
